Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
There is a plague in many churches, or as I am led to call it, there’s poison in many pots today. One of these poisons in the pot is the personal interpretation poison. Basically, it is where people no longer believe what the Word of God says, but have instead excused themselves, their practices, and their beliefs which are contrary to the Word. They do so by using the term personal interpretation when it comes to Scripture. They claim Scripture is open to interpretation, and as such, we should ‘respect’ when someone has a different interpretation than we have.
As a believer, let me state this. God has spoken. He has spoken clearly. He has spoken authoritatively. He has spoken definitively. he has spoken in most cases straightforward. His Word has not, will, not, and does not waiver. What He has said is set in stone. If we love Him, and really love Him, not just with lip services, but with all of our heart, then we will read His Word, hear His Word, and then obey His Word, period.
For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. Psalms 119:89 (KJV)
When God says that the Son of God ever lives, then the Son ever lives. If God has spoken to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, then He has spoken. When God says be holy in all manner of conversation, which means every area of life, then he means what He says. On and on, if God has spoken, and He has, if we love Him, we will not do what we want but what He says. There is no room for personal interpretation when God has spoken clearly in Scripture.
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. Malachi 3:6 (KJV)
When God speaks, His people listen. They do not try to interpret things their way, or try to explain things away. They do not look for loopholes, and try to change the meaning of words and phrases. They do not look to rebel, but when they fall short of the standard of The Word, they repent. Why? God has spoken. His Word is established, unchangeable, total in final authority, and the standard He has chosen for His true people.
And, God has taken His Word eternally seriously…
For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18-19 (KJV)
Personal interpretation, if it be not aligned with the Word of God, is adding to or taking away from the Word of God. It is damnation to your soul. As believers, we are not to have personal interpretations, but are called to discern and rightly divide the Word, understanding the Word as God has given by the Holy Spirit.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 2 Timothy 2:15-16 (KJV)
John Wesley said it like this about rightly dividing the Word, “Duly explaining and applying the whole scripture, so as to give each hearer his due portion.” God has spoken, and we are to explain and apply the Word so that the believer lives it out. We are not called to explain it away, nor are we called to add to it, but to explain unto application. Doing so with adding to the Scriptures or removing from them is ensure a pure stew for the Church and each believer. It ensures that there is no poison in the pot.
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. (Romans 16:17 KJV)
Nothing else needs saying. God has spoken. Let the Church, the real Church, say Amen!
Shalom and Maranatha.
